The social media marketing landscape grows and changes at a rapid rate, so knowing about social media trends can provide a leg up over the competition. A solid, nuanced social media marketing strategy isn't solely focused on which platform is the fastest-growing, however, as different platforms have different user bases and brand identities, as well as different thresholds for engagement. Facebook, for instance, is growing rapidly and reaches a wide range of people, but Twitter's low character limit may make it easier for brands to engage in a responsive and timely manner using the platform.

In 2018, Facebook and Instagram are outperforming almost all other platforms on most metrics. These two platforms have high frequency of engagement and high penetration, meaning more people signed up with these two platforms use them often. While other platforms, such as Twitter and Tumblr, may be a strong portion of the social media mix for certain groups, the upward trend for Facebook and Instagram is the strongest.
